Dental Crown: An Overview
Why would you require a crown?
Many patients may require a crown due to a weak or broken tooth causing discomfort. In some instances, patients may need correction to restore their dental function if they are unable to use their damaged tooth. Crowns are not only used in restorative dentistry but also in cosmetic dentistry. If you have a severely discolored tooth that is affecting your smile, Dr. Maghazchi can place a crown to restore your smile.
For patients looking to correct an oddly shaped tooth, we recommend the use of dental crowns. While porcelain veneers are ideal for fixing misshaped teeth, crowns effectively cover unattractive teeth.
Patients undergoing root canal therapy can expect to receive a crown after the procedure. The crown replaces the damaged enamel after removing decayed tooth matter. Dental crowns can also be used to replace missing teeth. For a single missing tooth, a dental implant can be surgically placed into the jawbone and a crown attached once it has healed. In cases of multiple missing teeth, two crowns can be placed on either side of the gap and a dental bridge attached.
Expectations
When you come to Smiland Dental, getting your crown procedure done usually involves two visits. At the first appointment, Dr. Maghazchi will check the affected tooth to make sure it can support a crown. If needed, a dental filling may be used to strengthen the tooth. The tooth will then be prepared by smoothing it out, and an impression of your teeth will be taken. This impression will be sent to a lab to create your custom crown. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth while the permanent crown is being made.
During the second appointment, the temporary crown will be taken off, and your permanent crown will be securely attached. By maintaining good oral hygiene and taking care of your crown, you can expect it to last a long time and provide reliable results.
